Northeast Hinterland is the Exactly Foundation’s first resident artist Kevin WY Lee’s visual response to land custodianship in Singapore, using night scenes of Punggol, a northeastern suburb slated to be “a waterfront town of the 21st century”. Kevin’s interests in identity and aspirations led him to explore the nocturnal of Singapore, an(other) realm of a same space seen in a less familiar, perhaps more disquieting light (or lack of). While Punggol looks to be the “new Singapore”, the township’s history dates back to colonial Singapore but now is better known for massive clearance of land for building new public housing estates – it could be of anywhere and of forgotten history. Kevin’s “Northeast Hinterland” is a series of nocturnes of an area, when sleep and sight are paradoxical, when histories, mythologies and legacies of the land play hide and seek with the past, present and future of its custodianship.

A book documenting his residency will also be launched at the exhibition opening.

Kevin WY Lee is a photographer and creative director based in Singapore. In 2010, he founded Invisible Photographer Asia (IPA), an influential platform for photography and visual arts in Asia. Through IPA, Kevin participates vigorously in photography and art across the region as a practitioner, curator and educator. In his own practice, Kevin is interested in Singapore – her temperament, aesthetic and growing pains.

Exactly Foundation is a not-for-profit, trademarked registered label established by Li Li Chung. Photographers are commissioned to create photography to stimulate discussion of social concerns in Singapore.
