Our first artist-in-residence for 2020
Objectifs is pleased to welcome Singapore filmmaker and visual artist Chong Lii as the artist-in-residence for our Artist Studio programme. The programme provides residents with valuable space to develop projects in a conducive environment.
Chong Lii’s work aims to explore the possibility of merging or levelling disparate spaces, objects, people, and images. Permeable frames of history and ontology are set against the spectacle of fiction, re-articulating the sociopolitical tensions from which these elements arise.
Chong received his B.A. from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (Amsterdam, NL). His work has appeared internationally in the VIVO Media Arts Centre, Singapore Art Museum, EYE Filmmuseum, Stedelijk Museum, SSBA Salon Culturele Deeltjesversneller van de Stadsschouwburg, Asian Film Archive’s Oldham Theatre, Singapore Short Film Awards, New People Cinema, and the 14th Athens Digital Art Festival, amongst others.
Chong is a designer for Mynah Magazine, an independent annual print magazine dedicated to exploring both contemporary and historical Singaporean culture.
During his residency, Chong aims to create an artistic response to narratives and materials surrounding Singapore’s experience(s) with outbreaks in the 21st century. The intention is not to produce documents of history; rather, he seeks to explore intersections of history and fictions.
